10,000 steps in km: the converter
10,000 steps are about 7 km for a person 1.70 m tall (from 6.2 km at 1.50 m to 7.9 km at 1.90 m). At a normal pace, about 100 steps a minute, allow 1 h 40 of walking. These are estimates: the length of your stride decides the result.
10,000 steps = about 7 km
Estimated step length: 70 cm
Slow pace: 2 h 05
Normal pace (your pace): 1 h 40
Fast pace: 1 h 23
Estimate: actual step length varies from person to person and with pace, terrain and fatigue. To measure yours, count your steps over a known distance.
How the conversion is calculated
- Step length = height × coefficient. Coefficient of 0.413 for a woman, 0.415 for a man, 0.414 if sex isn't specified (average of the two). For 170 cm: 170 × 0.414 = about 70 cm.
- Distance = number of steps × step length. 10,000 × 0.704 m = 7.04 km.
- Time = number of steps ÷ cadence. Cadence is the number of steps per minute: 80 (slow), 100 (normal), 120 (fast).
- Km to steps: distance in meters ÷ step length. 1 km at 1.70 m = about 1,421 steps.
Where these values come from:
- The coefficients 0.413 and 0.415 are attributed to Hatano (1993, a study on pedometers) and used by many calculators. We haven't read it directly: we cite it from secondary sources. It is an average approximation for a population, not a measurement of your stride.
- 100 steps per minute is the threshold adopted for moderate-intensity walking in adults aged 21 to 40 (Tudor-Locke et al., International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, 2019, CADENCE-Adults study, 76 adults on a treadmill). A 2020 study in the same journal finds this threshold again for ages 41 to 60.
- 80 and 120 steps per minute are values we chose to frame this threshold, not study results. Adjust them if you like: count your steps over 1 minute of your usual walking.
- The same studies put the threshold for vigorous intensity at 130 steps per minute; our fast pace (120) stays below it. At 100 steps per minute, with a 0.70 m step, the speed is about 4.2 km/h (100 × 0.70 m × 60 min).

Duration does not depend on height in this calculation: it depends only on the number of steps and the cadence.
How many steps for 1 km?
About 1,270 steps at 1.90 m, 1,420 at 1.70 m, 1,610 at 1.50 m. The converter gives the figure for your height.
Limits
- Your step gets longer when you walk fast and shorter uphill, in sand or late in the day. We keep the same length at every pace.
- The coefficients describe an average: two people of the same height have different steps.
- Your phone's pedometer can count slightly too many or too few steps depending on where it's carried, and it estimates a distance itself.
- For a reliable measure: walk 100 m at your pace, count the steps, divide 100 by that number.
- This tool gives distances and durations. It says nothing about what is good for your health.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilometers is 10,000 steps?
Between 6 and 8 km depending on height, about 7 km at 1.70 m.
What is the average length of a step?
About 70 cm at 1.70 m (height × 0.414). It ranges from about 62 cm at 1.50 m to 79 cm at 1.90 m.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
1 h 40 at 100 steps per minute, 2 h 05 at 80, 1 h 23 at 120.
Does the result change for a woman or a man?
Very little: 0.413 versus 0.415, about a 0.5% difference. At 1.70 m, the difference over 10,000 steps is about 34 m (7,021 m versus 7,055 m). The tool rounds to 0.1 km: it shows 7 km for a woman and 7.1 km for a man.
How do you go from kilometers to steps?
Choose “Km to steps” in the tool, or divide the distance in meters by your step length.
